Intown Atlanta has an obvious lack of both outdoor and indoor swim facilities. During the summer other nearby pools have their membership and swim lesson spots sell out in minutes or have multi-year waitlists. Meanwhile, APS only has one indoor pool facility across its entire district (in MLK Middle School). This means that the swim teams at Midtown High and Howard Middle schools train in a crowded facility, at off-hours, only 4x a week. Swimming is a lifelong skill and more importantly, a critical life still for drowning prevention. Our kids and the community deserve better pool access.
The Virginia-Highland Pool will teach hundreds of children to swim, provide a fantastic gathering place for the community, and alleviate the strain on APS’ swim facility to allow more students district wide to experience the sport. Below is a summary of year-round operations of the pool.
